The artist

Self-titled Adaptation of Peter Getting out of Nick's Pool (1966) Version II, 2018 is an adaptation after David Hockney's painting of the same title. It is made by using analogue photographic techniques; multiple exposure of shaped light on the same negative. I have created several of the Hockney's pieces into adaptations. Two versions of this picture as well – one with more noon light and other toward afternoon. His use of space is so specific that it makes the idea of dismantling and reconstructing a definite challenge and therefore captivating.

Hockney's special relationship to photography and concepts of optics has a special relationship to my theory of what photography can become.

Niko Luoma was born 1970 in Helsinki. He works in Helsinki and in Trieste.

After his studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (grad.1998), and the New England School of Photography, Boston (grad.1995), Luoma graduated as M.A. from the department of photography at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Helsinki in 2003. He taught at the Aalto University as a visiting lecturer from 2003 to 2013. He started as full time associate professor in the department of photography 2015.

Niko Luoma has played a key role internationally for the past twenty years with his experiments in photographic abstraction, combining multiple exposures on the same negative by using light as a raw material. His uniqueness is based around his system-based experiments where the negative becomes a record for its own realization, for the compositions of overlapping planes of color and dimensionality. His analogue working method incorporates the properties of chance into the process of his photographs, using it as fuel to enhance his attraction to the unknown. Influenced by order, structure, constitution and modification of space and the ideas of sound, flux and velocity.

He is represented in the international collections, including those of Finnish National Gallery (Helsinki, FI), Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art (Helsinki, FI), Danish National Museum of Photography (Copenhagen, DK) and Borusan Contemporary (Istanbul, TR). His monograph “And Time Is No Longer an Obstacle” was published by Hatje Cantz Verlag in 2012. His second monograph “For Each Minute – Sixty-Five Seconds”, will be published be Hatje Cantz Verlag in 2020.
