About Laphroaig
Laphroaig is a distillery that some find as hard to enjoy as they do to pronounce, while others relish its bold and uncompromising flavour. As one of only 3 distilleries on Islay that still operates its own malting floor, Laphroaig’s heavily peated, home-malted barley is the true essence of this intensely medicinal and smoky whisky. Once the kiln is lit, locally cut peat is burned for 15-16 hours to achieve this unmistakable flavour. Tasting notes of TCP, medicine and heavy smoke are commonplace when discussing Laphroaig’s greatest expressions. This mightn’t sound appealing to the uninitiated, but for many it is these rugged and challenging notes that make this spirit so bewitching, so much so that recently Laphroaig’s sales increased six-fold over seven years. While not for the faint of heart, this distillery has found itself as a favourite of independent bottlers in Scotland and throughout Europe, and its sherried expressions are among the most collectable whiskies in the world.
