A Set of Four George III Wine Coolers
Silver-gilt

London, 1769

Maker’s mark of Thomas Heming

The arms are those of Carroll of O'Carroll of Ireland. Charles Carroll or Carrolton was a wealthy Maryland planter and last surviving signatory of the Declaration of Independence. These elegant wine coolers are amongst the earliest of this new form of wine cooler introduced from France in the middle of the eighteenth century. Sets of four ice pails from this period are exceedingly rare. Each wine cooler has ram’s head handles and is engraved with a coat-of-arms.
