Catalogue Note

This large, highly finished drawing was one of a number of works on paper that Lagrenée exhibited at the Salon of 1777, and it seems to be preserved on its original mount from that time. A painting by the artist with the same subject was sold in Paris, 9 April 1793, lot 116, together with a pendant by Jean-Jacques' elder brother, Louis Lagrenée, representing Apollo and the Cumaean Sibyl.
