Catalogue Note

Kustodiev worked from June to August 1919 on the set and costume designs for The Power of the Fiend, an opera in five acts by Alexander Serov. The 1920 production at the former Mariinsky Theatre was directed by Feodor Chaliapin, who kept lots 65 and 66 for his personal collection.

Dasha is one of the main characters in Alexander Serov's opera The Power of the Fiend. Rejected by her unfaithful husband, the merchant Pyotr, Dasha decides to leave him and return to live with her parents. The story is set in 17th or 18th century Moscow during the Shrovetide festivities.
