This pair of chairs is a superb example of the art of the chair maker of the 1770s period. Although their form is copied from contemporary French models, their construction in mahogany has allowed the original form to become more accentuated as the strength of the timber allows far more freedom of expression to be achieved in making the curved and serpentine frame. It is interesting to note that a neo-classical element has been introduced to what is essentially a rococo frame with the small carved urns and trailing husks on the crest and seat-rails.
