Catalogue Note

The present lot comes from the collection of Beverly Whitney Kean (1921-2011), both a remarkable actress and art historian. In 1944, she starred in two Hollywood films alongside Anthony Quinn, Ladies of Washington and Irish Eyes Are Smiling. She visited Russia in 1959, and fascinated by the French paintings in Soviet museums, she decided to write about their original owners, Sergei Shchukin and Ivan Morozov. Her book All the Empty Palaces: The Merchant Patrons of Modern Art in Pre-Revolutionary Russia was published in 1983. Based on extensive original research (she was the last person to interview Picasso’s legendary dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler), the book is still considered the definite account of the two great Moscow collectors. She was a collector herself, at one point owning a Goncharova and an early Kandinsky.
