The scene depicted is the body of Christ immediately after being taken down from the cross. The hands and faces of all figures and the body of Christ are rendered in shaded silk embroidery. All other figures are embroidered in gold- and silver-wrapped silk thread. The figures have been replaced on a buff-colored ground, presumably in the nineteenth century, to conserve the 17th-century figural (litsovoe)embroidery. The border is embroidered in vyaz script with the Troparion of Holy Saturday: "The noble Joseph, when he had taken down Thy most pure body from the Tree, wrapped it in fine linen and anointed it with spices, and placed it in a new tomb."
