- Set of Five "Bucky" Chairs
- from an edition of 50
electrostatically upholstered polyurethane foam, five original aluminum connectors
Condition
Original condition consistent with age and use. This lot retains all five of the original metal connectors. The surface of each Bucky shows signs of wear consistent with use and the aging of the material. Each with surface dirt, some abrasions, crazing, scattered holes, areas of discoloration, nicks and small scattered losses. Each of the Buckys with isolated areas of slight geometric impressions in the foam, concentrated at the chairs’ high points and most visible on the blue and green Buckys. The yellow Bucky with a second circular impression on the proper right side measuring 2 inches in diameter. The yellow Bucky with a water stain to its underside. The proper left upper side of the high point with an area of rubbing to the foam and a vertical separation to the foam, each measuring approximately 8 inches long. The seat with some fading. The red Bucky with a water stain and horizontal mark measuring approximately 3 inches long to the proper right seat corner. The orange Bucky with crazing and a water stain on the seat. The green and blue Buckys with minor losses, none measuring more than approximately 1 inch. A great opportunity to acquire a highly visual, colorful design by Marc Newson.

Catalogue Note
Marc Newson designed the Bucky installation for the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, Paris. Fifty individual triangular elements that could be used as chairs were connected together to form a three-quarter sphere. Newson ''called it Bucky after the newly-discovered carbon molecule, the Buckminsterfullerene. As time was running out during the installation, Newson enlisted the help of Matthew Barney, who was working on his own Cremaster 4exhibiton for the Fondation, and several ex-French Legionnaires for the assembly.
