Catalogue Note

This richly gilded Buddha is depicted seated in the lotus position (padmasana) with right hand in gift-giving gesture (varamudra), open on the right knee with palm outward, and left hand in the meditation gesture (dhyanamudra), bearing an alms bowl. The iconography reveals the figure to be the Medicine Buddha, Bhaisajyaguru. It is rare to find a sculpture of the period with inlaid patchwork robe undulating across the chest. See a closely related but larger figure of Shakyamuni Buddha, inlaid in silver with similar patchwork robe, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 31st May 2017, lot 2804.
