Catalogue Note

Finely painted in shaded tones of cobalt blue with three detached floral sprays, the current dish was inspired by Ming dynasty designs. In addition to the generous spacing left white between decoration elements, a technique first seen on Yongle blue and white pieces, the inclusion of detached sprays also evokes doucai dishes of the Chenghua period, such as two enameled with fruiting sprays on the exterior and grapes on the interior, illustrated in Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Ch’eng-Hua Porcelain Ware, Taipei, 2003, cat. nos 182 and 183. See also a pair of saucer dishes of related design, similarly painted on the exterior with three detached floral sprays, sold twice in these rooms, 18th May 1988, lot 173 and 29th October 1991, lot 130, and recently sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 28th November 2018, lot 2909.
