Catalogue Note

A MAGNIFICENT DETAILED MAP OF LONDON. Rocque’s plan of London was the first survey since that carried out by William Morgan in the aftermath of the Great Fire. It was larger than any earlier published map of London as a whole, and at a scale of 26 inches to a mile, it is a primary record for the city in the mid-eighteenth century.

This is the first edition with the following text after the title: "This work was begun in March 1737 and published in October 1746 .. by Iohn Pine at the Golden Head against Burlington House, Piccadilly, and Iohn Tinney at the Golden Lion, Fleet Street...". Furthermore Chesterfield House (completed in 1749), Hill Street and John Street have not been added.

Please note the image showing the whole map is an illustration to show what the map would look like if the map sheets were joined together.
