"Formed and trained during the last century of Ottoman rule, the Greek navy was largely instrumental in bringing about the successful outcome of the Greek War of Independence that began in 1821... Most of [the paintings] are by the famous marine painters, A. Roux, father and son... Vice-Admiral Antonios Kriezis - although not a professional painter - meticulously copied them detail by detail" (introduction).
