Catalogue Note

On the journey upstream, Roberts arrived as Aswan on the 29 October and the following day he visited Philae. He described it as ‘a paradise in the midst of desolation. Its ruins even at a distance are more picturesque than any I have seen…’ (MS Eastern Journal, National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh) Roberts was back at Philae on the 17 November and he spent several days drawing there.

The present work, which shows the Island of Philae with the Kiosk of Trajan on the left and the Temple of Isis on right, was drawn when Roberts was back in London and was lithographed by Louis Haghe. We are very grateful to Briony Llewellyn for her help when cataloguing this lot.
