Condition
The canvas has not been lined and is securely attached to a keyed wooden stretcher that appears to be of the period. There is a pattern of hairline craquelure throughout, mainly in the sky and visible only upon close inspection. The surface appears to be somewhat dry and brittle in the landscape closer to the centre of the right framing edge and in the dark pigments in the foreground. With the exception of some bands of retouching along the upper and right framing edges respectively and of some small scattered spots of cosmetic retouching possibly addressing some old flaking, all of which are visible under ultra-violet light, this work is overall in good condition and is ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.

Catalogue Note
Löffler's view of the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Haram esh-Sharif (or Temple Mount) is towards the Mount of Olives in the east. The mosque is among the three holiest site in Islam. Muslims believe that Muhammad was transported from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca to al-Aqsa during the Night Journey.
Löffler first travelled to the Middle East in 1849, visiting Jerusalem, Egypt, Palestine, and Asia Minor, returning to Munich at the end of 1850. He enjoyed the patronage of the kings of Prussia and of Württemberg.
