Description

  • Diana resting
  • Oil on canvas
  • 120 x 168 cm; 47 1/4  by 66 1/8  in.

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Paris, Me Loudmer, 20 June 1994, lot 31 (as "French School circa 1650, Studio of Simon Vouet").

Condition

The actual painting shows more contrast than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The painting appears in a satisfactory condition. It has been relined, a bit strongly, probably in the middle of the 20th century. Some old repaired damages can be seen, one in the blue cloth between the legs of Diana, two minor ones along the right edge, in the central dog head, and some around the edges possibly due the framing. Some minor surface dirt is visible. It is under an old and very dirty varnish layer. Under UV: The painting appears under a green and uniform fluorescent varnish layer. We notice a restoration near the dog’s head and in and near Diane’s right hand. Offered with a carved and giltwood frame.
