Description
- The Madonna at Prayer
- Oil on canvas
- 47 x 39 cm; 18 1/2 by 15 1/3 in.
Condition
The actual painting is lighter than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has been relined (glue relining). The painted surface seems to be in a reasonably good condition with some thinness visible in the upper right and left background, her forehead, to the side of her face. Some discolored retouchings can be observed in her blue veil. The painted surface is covered with a fine and dense craquelure pattern. The varnish layer is quite dirty and discolored. Her facial features seem to be nicely preserved. Under the UV light A larger part of the varnish layer fluoresces, showing a retouched area in the upper part of her veil, and a larger one on the left of her veil. Some scattered throughout, and some retouchings in her forehead. Some strenghtenings can be observed in the background around the edges. Offered with a carved and giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note
We are grateful to Mr François Macé de Lépinay; in his opinion this is a work from Sassoferrato's studio.
