Description

  • Filippo Lauri
  • The Baptism of Christ; The Holy Communion of the Magdalene
  • A pair, both oil on canvas, octogonal
  • Each: 38 x 38 cm ; 15 by 15 in.

Provenance

Formerly in the collection of Georges Bemberg (1915-2011), Paris.

Condition

The actual pair of paintings is less red and slightly lighter in tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest. First painting (Christ): The painting has been relined. Some minor paint losses due to the framing can be seen around the edges. Some minor thinness throughout the surface, due to the relining. Some colours are nicely preserved. There are some tiny discoloured retouches, mainly in both the sky and the trees areas. The painted surface is covered with a fine and dense craquelure pattern. Under UV light The varnish layer fluoresces largely, showing some strengthening around all the edges, in the figure of God, in the angels and a few minor ones in the figures below. Second painting (Mary Magdalen) The canvas has been relined. The painted surface seems to be in a good condition. There are two areas of paint loss: one upper left (partly visible in the catalogue illustration) and one along the lower edges (also visible in the catalogue illustration). There is a diagonal superficial restored scratch in the upper part. The painted surface is covered with a fine and dense craquelure pattern. We can see some thinness. Under UV light There is some strengthening visible around the edges and in the upper part of the palm trees on the right. There are some scattered retouches in the figures (especially in the faces and the hands). There are different areas of fluorescence (possibly due to a partial cleaning). Both offered in a nice ornate carved and giltwood frames.
