Description

  • Madonna and child surrounded by Saints Peter, Paul, Andrew and Jacques
  • Oil on poplar panel
  • 34,8 x 43,6 cm ; 13 1/2  by 17 1/4  in.

Condition

The actual painting is lighter in tone and shows more contrast than the catalogue illustration would suggest. Painted on a single piece of panel with two vertical batons inset on its reverse; another horizontal one is glued onto its reverse. The painted surface seems to be in a reasonably satisfactory condition. Covered with a dense coarse craquelure pattern, which has tendency towards dryness in places. Thinness can be observed in the background. The colours of the clothing of the figures seems to be nicely preserved. Various small retouchings can be seen throughout. Under the UV light The varnish layer fluoresces in some parts showing the strong craquelure pattern and various retouchings throughout. Offered with a modern black painted wooden frame with a silver painted fillet.
