Condition

This work is in good overall condition, and the artist’s distinctive impasto well preserved. The work could benefit from a professional clean and revarnishing if desired. The artist’s panel is slightly raised at the centre of each framing edge, and has been laid down within a later wood panel which covers the reverse and edges. This appears to be stable. There are a couple of tiny scattered spots of paint flaking, visible only under close inspection, including one in the red flowers towards the upper centre, and another in the white pigments to the right of this. Under ultra-violet light the old varnish fluoresces quite opaquely making the surface difficult to read; some very minor retouchings are just visible, notably to the left of the signature and near the centre of the lower edge. Catalogue illustration: the colours in reality are less yellow than they appear in the catalogue illustration.
