Catalogue Note

Dated by the artist 70, this Seaside landscape by Gustave Courbet is one of a series of marine landscapes the artist started to work on during his first journey in the Languedoc, in spring and summer 1854. From this date, the painter never ceased to depict this motif of the coastline, whether it was through the subject of the wave, symbolizing the power of nature, or through the subject of the shore, like here. The light and the atmosphere held the painter's attention, but he also wants to convey the sensation of immensity in this landscape, where there's no human presence, except for some details such as the sails on the horizon.

The following year, Courbet was imprisoned because of his action during the Paris Commune. Missing his former freedom and great spaces such as the one he represented here, he wrote in a letter to a friend: "Alas, it is far away from me. Farewell to the sea and to the great skies".

This painting will be included in Gustave Courbet's catalogue raisonné under preparation by the Gustave Courbet Committee.
