Description

  • Wooded village landscape with travellers and horse-drawn wagons, horses, cattle and a horse-drawn cart near a stream
  • Oil on copper, the reverse of which shows a Corinthian architectural design for an entrance with columns (re-used etching plate)
  • 18,1 x 27,7 cm ; 7 1/4  by 11 in.

Condition

The actual painting is actually less yellow and shows more contrast than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The copper plate is nice, stable and flat; on its reverse, as it is a re-used old copper plate, there is a design for a Corinthian column incised (see images on the website). There are some minor paint losses around the edges, due to the framing. The painted surface seems to be in a good condition, with the colours and details nicely preserved. It is covered with a dirty and yellow varnish layer. We can see some few discoloured retouchings throughout. Under UV light The varnish layer fluoresces completely, showing some tiny spots along the upper edge. Offered with a gold painted new wooden frame.
