Catalogue Note

These delicate gouaches by Charlier repeat compositions by François Boucher. The first, the Toilet of Venus is most close to another gouache by Charlier after Boucher kept in the Musée du Chartres (see A. Ananoff, François Boucher, Paris/Lausanne 1976, vol. I, p. 351, no. 237/6, reproduced on p. 352). The Triumph of Amphitrite this replicates a now lost painting, which is known through several drawings and analogue works; the closest to our work being a drawing sold London, Sotheby's, 10 June 1959, lot 2 (ibidem, vol. II, p. 47, nos. 348/6 and p. 77, no. 375/4, reproduced).
