Catalogue Note

The children in the foreground are the grandchildren of the painter playing on the beach at Ault-Onival (Somme). The artist had his villa built overhanging the cliff at Onival in the late 1870's. He painted during the 1880's and 1890's several views of the region and seaside scenes often exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, notably the sunsets he could see from his studio.  We are grateful to Patrick Faucheur who has kindly shared his knowledge on the work. The painting will be included in the catalogue raisonné currently in preparation.
