Description

  • Hubert Robert
  • A night-time scene with buildings ablaze
  • Oil on panel, oval
  • 35,4 x 28,5 cm; 14 by 11 1/4  in.

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Paris, Me Jean-Marc Delvaux, 11 April 2008, lot 97.

Condition

The panel seems to consist of a single piece of wood, nice and flat, shaped into an oval ; it is bevelled all around. The painted surface seems to be in a good condition, with very minor paint losses around the edges. Most impastos seem to be very nicely preserved. The painted surface is covered with a fine and dense craquelure pattern. A few discoloured retouchings can be seen in between the beams and on their left. Under UV light The varnish layer fluoresces in some parts, showing different areas of retouching. Offered with a rectangular frame with an oval inset. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the condition of the frame.
