Description

  • An important bust of Neptune
  • 82 x 70 cm ; 32 1/3 x 27 1/2 in.

Condition

The marble has suffered from outdoor exposure. The marble surface appears to have been cleaned, and shows natural grey veining. There is some minor grey staining to the shoulders and breast which may also be remains of old deposit of lichen. There appear to be some old filled areas in some of the slightly open veins, in particular to his hair, beard, and drapery, as can be seen in the photograph. There is a diagonal hairline split to his proper right breast and to the drapery of his proper right shoulder. There is minor surface dirt in the crevices. There are some losses to the high points and to the edges of the drapery and restoration to some of the points on his crown. The marble base has been restored and a modern marble plinth has been recently added to make the bust more stable.
