Catalogue Note

Stampa, the birthplace of the Giacometti family, has been the subject of several major works by Giovanni and this superb landscape is undeniably one of them. The view from Italy is particularly interesting, as it offers a panoramic view of this valley which is so dear to the artist. The composition of this landscape is extremely innovative and unusual. Indeed, it gives grants preeminence to the sky and to the winter atmosphere, the village occupying only the foreground of the picture. With such structural bias Giacometti gives greatest importance to the work on colour, as two thirds of the painting are depicted in a newly abstract dimension. Moreover it confirms, through the arrangement of the colours and the intense pictorial layer its position, as the most eminent representative of the post impressionism in Switzerland.
