Catalogue Note

Little is known of Cesare Roccheggiani before the opening of his shop on Via Condotti in 1874. However, examination of his mosaics suggests he may have worked in Michelangelo Barberi's workshop. He is doubtless related to Lorenzo and Nicolo Roccheggiani, two principle artists at the Vatican in the late 18th / early 19th century. A group of his micro-mosaics was exhibited in the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition, in Philadelphia. A large view of St. Peter's Square, signed and dated 1879, was sold by Christie's London, 2 December 2014, lot 109 (GBP290.500).
