Description

  • Diorama with Saint George and the Dragon
  • fruitwood, in a glazed gilt and ebonised wood frame
  • 32 by 29cm., 12 5/8  by 11 3/8 in.

Condition

The diorama has not been examined outside of its frame. There are some losses to the foliage decoration at the top of the carving. There may be further losses to the micro-carving. There is some minor stable splitting to the carving in areas. There is glue and a white residue, possibly a gesso, visible to the carving throughout, which may have been applied as restoration or reinforcement. There appears to be a reattachment to St George's lance. Otherwise the condition is stable. There is flaking and there are losses to the polychromy of the frame. There is evidence of past worming to the frame in areas. There is some stable splitting to the frame, and a separately carved piece of wood has been inserted at the top, probably for stability.
