Description

  • 6.5cm., 2 1/2 in.; 7.5cm., 3in.; 8.5 cm., 3 1/4 in.; 6.5 cm., 2 1/2 in.
the first octagonal émail de Saxe, circa 1735, the lid decorated in polychrome enamels and raised gilding with alternating vignettes and flowering branches, the sides swagged, the base with a mercantile quayside scene, reeded silver-gilt mounts and lining; two rectangular French examples with silver mounts, one painted with birds, flowers and fruit, the other with floral trelliswork enhanced with raised gilding, each with discharge mark of Julien Berthe, Paris, 1750-56; and a cartouche-shaped silver box chased with putti and small animals within strapwork, maker's mark possibly PLV, discharge mark of Louis Robin, Paris, 1738

Condition

The first with some surface wear and losses to gilding, several hairline cracks, a chip below the hinge; the second and third generally in good order, some losses to gilding and a few hairline cracks, the bigger example with traces of glue below the hinge, the silver box with very light surface wear and a dent to the lower left back corner, otherwise good condition
