Description

  • 46.9 cm, 18 1/2  in.
the globular body supported on three tubular legs issuing from mythical animal masks, rising to an everted rim set with two upright loop handles, the exterior decorated with stylised taotie masks divided by two raised vertical flanges, below a band of archaistic bird motifs, all reserved on a leiwen ground, wood cover and stand

Condition

This censer is in generally good condition, with the exception of a patching to the rim (approx. 2.5 x 0.6 cm). The area incised with five anarchistic Chinese character (approx. 5.5 x 5 cm) to the interior wall may have been elicited from a different vessel and applied to the present. There are also nicks to the extremities, general surface wear and minor manufacturing flaws.
