Catalogue Note

Voir Boos, Ancient Oaxaca, 1966, fig. 161, pour une divinité apparentée. The heavily adorned seated figural urns are a hallmark of the Monte Albán region in Oaxaca. Nearly obscuring the figure, these accoutrements identify the deity Pitao Cozobi, the god of the Glyph L, a maize deity of fertility. He wears the snouted nasal mask with upcurled scrolls, brackets on the cheeks, massive headdress and pectoral extending to his lap. See Boos, Ancient Oaxaca, 1966, fig. 161, for the deity type.
