Catalogue Note

FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY FEYNMAN. AN EXCELLENT ASSOCIATION COPY, from the small private library of Feynman's "beloved secretary" Helen Tuck, who had prepared the elaborate camera-ready typescript from which this edition was printed: thus, it was she, in effect, who 'set the type'. Feynman in fact thanks her on page xvi "I also wish to thank Mrs. Helen Tuck for typing the lecture notes."  The book embodies Feynman's lectures in "The most advanced course in graduate theoretical physics at Caltech" in 1971-72. Physicist David Pines, when looking back on this book 25 years later observed that it "reflects his [Feynman's] deep physical insight, the freshness and originality of his approach to understanding physics, and his overall pedagogical wizardry. As a result, this volume will always be of fundamental importance to anyone interested in understanding the development of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) — the theory of quarks and gluons — which explains hadron-hadron interactions at high energies."
