Condition

The black and gilt dragon panels are likely of an earlier date. The panels with characteristic splitting, lifting and flaking lacquer, some areas of which have been restored and consolidated. There is overall wear to the lacquer and gilt decoration and darkened semi-circular outlines and filled holes from previous metal mounts, indicating that the panels were once part of a larger piece, perhaps cabinets. The frame with losses along edges, some consolidation and wear overall.
