Literature

‘Shottesbrooke Park, Berks., The Seat of Mr Guy. O. Smith’, in Country Life, vol. XXXIII, no. 839, 1 February 1913, p. 167;
Inventory of the Property of Guy O. Smith at Shottesbrooke Park
, 1928, vol. II, 'The Principal Pictures / Drawing Room / Monkey Barbers; by D. Teniers 8½ x 11.'

Condition

The panel is uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish discoloured. There are some horizontal areas of tenting (raised areas) in the paint surface: in the shoulder of the seated monkey, right; to the left of the doorframe, upper centre; in the blue coat of the monkey, left, and the monkey beside him; and by the vase, lower left. There is also some tenting in the seat of the chair on which the cat sits, which has resulted in three small, associated losses. There are also some small losses in the lower left and upper left corners. There are two spots of visible retouching either side of the owl poster, upper centre. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a streaky varnish, which fluoresces opaquely, making it difficult to discern previous restoration, but the painting appears to be large free of any other intervention.
