Condition

The canvas has an old relining, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish is discoloured. The paint surface is somewhat flattened with a degree of wear visible in some of the lighter tones. There has been a small knock to the canvas in the background to the left of the sitter's head, and a small area of associated retouching. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals extremely little intervention, save for a handful of small retouchings in the upper left corner, and very few other scattered spot retouchings in the background around the sitter's head, and in his cap.
