Description

  • Pietro Antoniani
  • A panoramic view of Paestum with gentlemen on the Grand Tour in the foreground
  • oil on canvas
  • 12 7/8  by 19  1/2  in.;  32.9 by 49.6 cm.

Condition

The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is in good condition, with a fine web of craquelure throughout that is stable. Under UV inspection, small retouches are visible in the sky along craquelure lines, as is a line of repair in the upper right corner in response to frame abrasion. In the area of the figures and buildings, the varnish fluoresces unevenly, but no large areas of retouching are observable. The painting can hang as is but would likely benefit from a light cleaning. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

The Milanese artist Pietro Antoniani focused almost exclusively on views of Naples and its environs throughout his career, garnering the attention of prominent clientele and Grand Tourists.  In the present work, he renders a panoramic view of Paestum, a Greek coastal town just south of Naples.  Prominent structures among the ancient ruins of the city are the three temples of the Doric order seen here, with the Athena Temple at left and the two Hera Temples at right, as well as remnants of the city wall.  The view here appears to be from the coast looking east towards the Cilento Mountains.
