Catalogue Note

This confidently rendered sketch of a young artist with engaging eyes and a lively visage is reminiscent of Johann Zoffany's self-portraits. Charles Greig, to whom we are grateful, endorses an attribution to Zoffany after firsthand inspection. He believes Zoffany completed this canvas in Italy in the early 1770s.
