Condition

The panel is comprised of a single board that is stable, with all four edges gilded. The painting is in good condition, with the paint surface beautifully preserved. On the sky you can appreciate the lose strokes of the paint and its layering through the impasto of the clouds. Further impasto is also present in the architectural structures. A pindot of gold, possibly from the aforementioned gilding, is at upper right though this is not to distracting. What appears to be very minor frame abrasions are along the upper edge, but these are not distracting. Inspection under UV reveals no retouches. Frame can hang in its current state and is offered in a gilded wood frame.

Catalogue Note

Antonietta Brandeis was Czech and a pupil of the history painter Karel Javurek (1815-1909) of Prague. After the death of her father, her family moved to Venice where she would enroll as an art student in the Venetian Academy of Fine Arts. It is here where she developed as a meticulous vedutista, creating landscape scenes filled with intricate details that captured the luminosity and beauty of Venice. This painting is exemplary of her training, and shows the first curve in the Grand Canal when coming from Piazza San Marco. The beautifully depicted buildings to the left are Ca' Rezzonico,  Palazzo Nani Bernardo, Palazzo Giustinian, followed by Ca' Foscari until reaching Palazzo Balbi. We are grateful to Charles Beddington for endorsing the attribution on the basis of photographs.
