Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work is painted on a single piece of oak which is unreinforced on the reverse. The wax seals are clearly visible. There is an old vertical crack in the panel in the background on the right side. The varnish has become slightly scuffed and milky in the darker colors. The condition overall is very good. There are a few recent retouches to the crack on the right side, a line of retouches in the cheek and a few retouches across the lower center and lower left. The signature and date in the left background have not been cleaned and still show the old varnish. There do not seem to be retouches beneath the old varnish, except possibly in the background to the right of the forehead. Cleaning, varnishing and restoring the picture more accurately would bring more life to the portrait.
