Description

  • A guardroom interior
  • 23 5/8  by 28 3/4  in.; 60 by 73 cm.

Condition

The canvas has an old and thin relining and is stable on its stretcher. The painting reads well beneath an old and slightly discolored varnish. Inspection under UV reveals a milky varnish that impedes some inspection. It also reveals some retouching to the extreme edges of the painting, likely due to old frame abrasion, as well as an area of retouching (about 3 by 4 inches) near the center of the right edge. There are only very few fine strokes and small spots of retouching visible under UV light, for example, one spot in the upper right background, some strokes near the chin and in the hat of the seated figure at left holding the mug, one spot in the head of the standing figure at left, one small spot in the background at left, and some strokes of strengthening in and around the hats of the figures in the background at center. The painting might benefit from a light clean, but can certainly also hang as is. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.
