Circle of Vittor Gambello, called 'Camelio' (1460-1537)
North Italian, perhaps Venice, first half 16th century
HERCULES POMARIUS

Provenance

James R. Herbert Boone;
His estate sale, Sotheby's, New York, November 22, 1998, lot 108

Catalogue Note

Several variants of this Renaissance bronze, copied after the Antique, exist in museums including the Jacquemart André, Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Widely attributed to Camelio by early scholars, Warren (op.cit., p. 268) questions the attribution of this group of Hercules statuettes to Camelio, and instead ascribes a different cast of Hercules in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford to that sculptor.
