Cesare Dandini
FLORENCE 1596 - 1657
SAINT AGNES

Literature

S. Bellesi, Cesare Dandini, Turin 1996, pp. 132, 134, cat. no. 7, reproduced p. 134 and pl. XXVI.

Catalogue Note

Unpublished until Bellesi's 1996 catalogue raisonné, this tender depiction of Saint Agnes is considered to be the prime version of a subject to which the artist returned multiple times. The strong colors, polished surfaces and elegant composition are distinctly Florentine, and exhibit Dandini's great skill in creating intimate, devotional paintings.  The Roman Saint Agnes is identified here by her characteristic lamb and palm; the patron saint of chastity and virginity, her innocence and divine beauty are captured elegantly by Dandini in this popular composition.
