Condition

The copper support is flat and stable. The painting reads well beneath an old and slightly dirty varnish. There are some small areas of craquelure in the shadows of the costume of the seated figure at lower right. There has been some areas of faint rubbing to the surface, for example, in the figure's faces. There is a small spot of loss in the lower left corner. Inspection under UV reveals a milky varnish that impedes some examination. Visible are some more recent spots of retouching scattered here and there throughout, for example, in the lower right background and in the shadows of the seated figure, in her costume, along the back and head of the animal at center, in the back of Joseph, in the lower left and right corners, and spots in the background at upper right. There may be additional spots of old retouching, though these are difficult to see through the varnish. Offered in a decoratively carved gilt and darkwood frame.
