Literature

A. Pinelli, "Pier Francesco di Jacopo Foschi," in Gazette des Beaux-Arts, vol. 69, 1967, p. 99, reproduced p. 106, figure 26.

Condition

The panel is beveled on all four sides with one horizontal support on the back. The paint surface is stable with craquelure present throughout. The portrait image reads well with small details retained such as in the beard. Minor frame abrasions are visible along the lower right edge and at the lower left corner. Under UV inspection, small areas of retouching are visible in the sitter's hair and beard, for example near his ear and at the bottom of the beard in finely applied strokes. Retouching is also visible on both of the sitter's shoulders, on the right as two vertical lines and on the left as a circular patch. Overall the painting is in good condition and would possibly improve with a cleaning. Offered unframed.

Catalogue Note

Completely unknown until the mid-20th century, Foschi was one of the leading painters in 16th-century Florence. He trained with Andrea del Sarto and contributed to the decorative programs for the marriage of Cosimo I de’Medici and Eleanor of Toledo in 1539, and for the marriage of Francesco de’Medici and Johanna of Austria in 1565. In addition to religious and history painting, Foschi was also a skilled portraitist. The detailed treatment of a Dominican friar seen here has similarities with the male saints in one of his most important works, the altarpiece of the Disputation over the Immaculate Conception completed by 1550 for the Church of Santo Spirito.
