Catalogue Note

The author of the present figure may have been a Spanish sculptor active in Italy in the first quarter of the sixteenth century. The gestures and twisting of the figure as well as the expressive face are indicative of the first period of Florentine Mannerism, exemplified by the work of the Italian masters Giambologna and Cellini as well as Berruguete and Juan de Juni of Spain.
