Provenance

Anonymous sale ('The Property of a Lady'), London, Sotheby's, 6 December 1995, lot 229, where acquired.

Catalogue Note

Claes Molenaer became a member of the Haarlem guild of Saint Luke in 1651. Previously thought to have been the brother of Jan Miense Molenaer, it now seems certain that the artists were not related, although they did know each other. In his landscapes, Claes was heavily influenced by Salomon and Jacob van Ruisdael and Jan van Goyen, and the present painting has a distinct Haarlem flavour.
