Catalogue Note

Located north of the island of Guernsey, the Ortach rock has an important place in Victor Hugo's graphic work as well as in his literary work. In 1862, he starts describing it and drawing it in his notebooks, and he mentions it in novels. The drawing presented here, executed in 1868, comes from Paul Meurice's collection, a close friend of Victor Hugo.
We would like to thank Pierre Georgel for kindly authenticating this work. It will be included in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné.
