Condition
The sculpture and stringed elements all appear to be sound. The stringing is not original, but has been recently restrung by Plowden and Smith. There are two areas of possible casting imperfections along the upper side of the sculpture, either side of the recessed area. There are a very small number of further nicks and tiny scratches in places. There is one possible finger print on the underside of the sculpture, with what appears to be the adhesive remnants of an old sticker around it. There are one or two tiny pits and casting imperfections, only visible upon extremely close inspection. The recessed areas are clean and have an even patina across their surface. The sculpture has recently been repolished and has a rich lustrous tone. The work appears to be in very good overall condition. The work is freestanding. Catalogue Note
‘Undoubtedly the source of my stringed figures was the Science Museum ... I was fascinated by the mathematical models I saw there, which had been made to illustrate the difference of the form that is half-way between a square and a circle... It wasn’t the scientific study of these models but the ability to look through the strings as with a bird cage and to see one form within another which excited me.’ (Henry Moore, quoted in John Hedgecoe (ed.), Henry Moore, London, 1968, p.105)
