Catalogue Note
Jurgen Wibmann, Joseph Albers - Homages to the Square as the unity of rationality and sensitivity, Colonia 1989.
"All colour perceptions are illusory. We do not see colours as they really are. We can perceive two colors as being similar to each other, or two identical colors may appear different. Or we may perceive opaque colours as translucent ... this game of colours, their shifting identity, is the object of my research and studies."
Josef Albers, student and later professor at the Bauhaus, brought forth the stylistic research of an art focused on the sensory capacities of the observer. The obsessive study of colour, its juxtaposition of similar or complimentary tonalities, and the declination of the square in all its dimensions became the stylistic imprint which characterized his work and made him so unique.
Study to Remote presents a sharp contrast of colours: the exterior square, in the colour terra di Siena, encloses a concentric labyrinth of complimentary tonalities, in three different shades of green. The outcome is not only the exaltation of the chromatic palette but also of a perspective orientated towards the centre of the artwork. The technique is a testimony to a great awareness of the potential of colour and its capacity to distort the real perspective, thus creating a new understanding of the third dimension.
